Nigerian ports were shut down by workers on the first day of an industrial action and mass protest declared by the Labour and Civil Society Coalition.

The ports remains closed until further notice is given by the labor unions, Comrade Nted Emmanuel, president of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, told reporters.

Three people were reported killed during the first day of the strike. The unions have called for protests to continue until the government reinstates fuel subsidies, which were eliminated on Jan. 1, 2012, doubling the price of gas.
