Jumbo transported the submarine Ouessant S623 from Brest, France to Malacca, Malaysia, where it will be installed at a theme park.
The construction of the submarine posed challenges to the Jumbo team, according to a company statement. Because submarines have a relatively thin and flexible outer hull and a stiff and pressure-resistant inner hull, damage could occur to the hull when lifting wires were connected to it.
Jumbo contracted with its engineering partners, the Delft University of Technology, engineering agency Saltwater and the French navy, to design a framework for use during on and off lifting and for road transport.
Two frames were used to lift the 1,100-ton submarine onto the Fairpartner at Brest. In Malaysia the submarine was offloaded onto a barge. A trailer was also loaded onto the barge to be used on the final leg of the journey over roads to the Melaka Eco Theme Park.
