Westinghouse Electric announced it will establish Westinghouse Electric Canada. The headquarters will be located in Toronto, Ontario.
Westinghouse said the move is designed improve its competitive position in Canada to market its new AP1000 reactor as well as its 200-megawatt small modular reactor currently under development. The AP1000 would compete with the Canada’s Advanced Candu reactor.
Last year Canada privatized its nuclear development, which was taken over by SNC-Lavalin. The home grown CANDU reactor is used throughout Canada’s nuclear power plants and has been exported to India, Pakistan, Argentina, South Korea, Romania and China.
Westinghouse reactors are used in one-half of the world's operating nuclear plants, including 60 percent of those in the United States and 40 percent worldwide, according to a Westinghouse statement.
